Barclays’ Regional Investment Map shows the region still generating new companies, but with less equity funding than the previous six months.
- The North East recorded £44.7m of equity investment in H1 2026.
- That is 19.4% down on the previous six months.
- Activity is growing in advanced manufacturing, life sciences and digital.

The North East recorded £44.7m of equity investment in the first half of 2026, down 19.4% on the previous six months, according to the latest Barclays Regional Investment Map.
The map, produced by Barclays Eagle Labs using Beauhurst data, gives a snapshot of business creation, grants and equity investment across the UK.
New companies, less capital
The data shows the North East continuing to generate new companies, with growing activity in advanced manufacturing, life sciences and digital.
Reading the numbers carefully
Six-month regional figures are very volatile, especially in a smaller ecosystem where one large raise can change the total. The data also records completed deals rather than demand for investment that went unmet.
That means the map shows what happened, but not why. It cannot say whether the constraint is the quality of the pipeline, how ready companies are for investment, the wrong type of finance or a lack of follow-on capital.
