Newcastle Slips to 182nd in Global Start-Up Rankings
The city has fallen ten places in two years on the StartupBlink index, as national tech lists continue to overlook the North East.

- That follows a seven-place fall the previous year.

Newcastle has fallen to 182nd in StartupBlink’s 2026 Global Startup Ecosystem Index, down three places on last year after a seven-place drop the year before.
StartupBlink ranks the start-up and innovation environments of more than 1,000 cities and 100 countries, and is widely used as an annual barometer. On its current trajectory, Newcastle could fall out of the top 200 within a couple of years.
Low visibility in national lists
The ranking comes alongside weak representation in recent sector coverage. Tech Nation’s latest Breakout 50 featured three North East firms, a recent Barclays Eagle Labs AI report featured one, and Prolific North’s Northern tech scale-ups list included only one company from the region.
Capability versus start-ups
Commentators have drawn a distinction between the region’s overall technology capability, which is strong, and how well it creates and grows new start-ups, which the rankings suggest is falling behind. Newcastle Tech Digest’s Jamie Hardesty argued that the region lacks density: too many founders building in isolation, with too few experienced peers, early-stage investors and large organisations willing to become their customers.
