Sunderland-headquartered renewables developer OnPath Energy has agreed to sell its Barnsdale Solar Park in West Yorkshire to Octopus Renewables Infrastructure Trust, a London-listed company managed by Octopus Energy Generation. The deal is subject to closing conditions.

OnPath has spent the last 18 months building the solar park, which sits between Kippax and Allerton Bywater, east of Leeds. It will generate enough electricity to meet the annual needs of up to 19,000 homes.

About the project

Barnsdale was awarded a Contract for Difference in the government’s fifth allocation round and is expected to connect to the National Grid later this year. A community fund linked to the site is expected to receive around £1m over the project’s life.

The site will also deliver a 106% biodiversity net gain, which OnPath says is the biggest increase for any renewable energy project in Leeds to date.

Chief executive Richard Dunkley said proceeds from sales would be used to advance OnPath’s pipeline across the UK. The company plans to invest around £1bn in clean energy projects over the next five years.
