Atom Bank co-founder Mark Mullen is stepping down as chief executive after more than a decade in the role. Chief financial officer Andrew Marshall will take over on an interim basis while the bank looks for a permanent successor.
Mullen has been at Atom for almost its entire story, from launching Britain’s first app-based bank to building one of the North East’s best-known technology businesses and, eventually, a profitable bank.
A moment of change
The leadership change comes at a significant time for the bank, which moved its headquarters from Durham to Newcastle’s Pattern Shop last year. After years of considering an exit, first through a stock market listing and more recently through an outright sale, shareholders reportedly shelved a sale process this summer after failing to attract an acceptable offer at a valuation of more than £600m.
