Sedgefield-headquartered Filtronic has secured a £1.2m funding package to develop a next-generation high-power amplifier for satellite communications.

The product

The 550W Ka-Band Solid-State Power Amplifier is designed to fit into existing satellite ground stations, offering a plug-and-play replacement for older travelling wave tube amplifier technology.

Ka band is central to the growth of non-geostationary satellite constellations and to services such as in-flight connectivity and 5G non-terrestrial networks.

Why it matters

Chief executive Nat Edington said the award reflected the strength of Filtronic’s innovation pipeline. The UK Space Agency said the project is a good example of the National Space Innovation Programme turning UK research into commercial products.
