Two North East businesses have been named on this year’s Startups 100, the annual list of what it describes as the most promising new UK companies.

XR Therapeutics placed 37th and Literal Labs placed 38th. The list is now in its 18th year, and the North East has historically struggled to win places on it.

The two companies

XR Therapeutics works in the mental health and neurodivergence space. Its chief operating officer is Penny Day.

Literal Labs develops fast, energy-efficient and explainable AI using logic-based models that can run anywhere, from small Internet of Things devices to enterprise systems.

Why it matters

Lists like this are an indicator rather than a definitive measure of a start-up’s potential, but they bring national visibility, and both teams have reason to be proud of their inclusion.
