Lockheed Martin Space UK has signed a long-term master research agreement with Northumbria University.
The agreement builds on the company’s existing £15m commitment to the North East Space Skills and Technology Centre (NESST), which is planned for Northumbria’s Newcastle city campus.
What the partnership covers
The two will work together on areas including space-based optical communications, energy and space weather.
University-industry agreements are not unusual, but the scale of the investment, the long-term commitment and a significant new physical centre in NESST set it apart. Newcastle Tech Digest described it as probably the biggest North East tech story of late, and it could lead to new ideas, innovations and companies emerging from the region’s space sector.
