Planning permission has been granted for a £100m “neural edge” AI data centre at Preston Farm Industrial Estate in Stockton-on-Tees.

Latos Data Centres is bringing the facility forward. Construction is due to start in the final quarter of 2025, with operations beginning in early 2027. Latos says it is prioritising North East suppliers and contractors.

What neural edge means

Unlike traditional cloud data centres, neural edge facilities bring AI computing closer to businesses and communities, cutting processing times from seconds to milliseconds.

Part of a national plan

The Stockton site is the latest step in Latos’ plan to build 40 neural edge data centres across the UK by 2030. Chief executive Mike Carlin linked it to Stockton’s history, noting the town launched the world’s first passenger railway 200 years ago.
